I remember when I was in Christian school, I memorized large sections of Scripture. Students were able to do this by repeatedly reading the passage aloud.
Well, it takes time to memorize passages and even some verses.
Listed below are Bible verses that are easy to memorize because they are among the shortest in the Bible.
• John 11:35: Jesus Wept.
Jesus experienced human emotion and grief. How does this encourage our faith? In the midst of difficult times, we can call upon a Lord and Savior who can empathize with us. He went through trials and suffering himself. He is thus able to comfort us during those times.
• I Thessalonians 5:17: Pray continually.
Even in the midst of difficult circumstances, we are encouraged to keep on praying both…
• For ourselves
• For others
• Hebrews 13:8: Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Although we may experience many changes in life directly as well as indirectly, it’s encouraging to know that Jesus never changes.
• Colossians 3:2: Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
Where do we find an encouraging message in this verse regarding our faith? Well, it’s a reminder to us that the things on this earth are temporary. Why not set our minds on what will last forever. This short, easy to memorize verse from Colossians helps put things in perspective for us.
• Phil. 4:4: Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!
This verse may seem to give us a difficult instruction, as we don’t always feel like rejoicing. However, the context makes clear we can take certain steps to get to the point of rejoicing. Instead of being anxious (Phil. 4:5), we can give thanks and offer up our petitions before the Lord. As a result, He blesses us with peace. Out of that peace, we then enter into a state where we can rejoice!
• Matthew 5:14: You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.
This verse encourages us about our purpose in life. The tone of Jesus’ words is such that He expects us to fulfill that purpose. We have value in the Lord to do His work. He gives us wisdom to follow this instruction to be a light in this world.
• 1 Chronicles 16:11: Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.
I’ve talked to many people who have said if it wasn’t for their faith, they wouldn’t be able to make it. By seeking the Lord and His strength continually, we can handle the stresses of life.
The talk of God having a face metaphorically could refer to being in a relationship with Him and His closeness to us.
• Matthew 11:30: For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
As we turn our burdens over to the Lord, it’s as if a weight is lifted off our shoulders. God gives us His peace.
• 1 John 4:19: We love because he first loved us.
Based on God’s love for us as described in the Bible, we are encouraged to have that same loving spirit and approach to life. This encourages us to live a life of peace, because our focus is on God and others.
• Psalm 56:3: When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
This verse encourages us by saying WHEN you are afraid, meaning…okay…we are human beings. Fear grips us in moments throughout our lives, HOWEVER, we don’t have to GIVE IN to or be in bondage to fear. The goal is to consciously put our trust in God. Confess that in prayer and turn the issues over.
• 1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
God's care and availability for us to cast our anxiety on Him helps us through each day.
• 2 Timothy 2:7: For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
This verse is a bit longer than the others, but I thought it was worth sharing. When you struggle with fear, this is a great verse to recite. The Lord did not give me a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind.
